Must know – Recent student visa rule changes in top study abroad countries​

After relaxation of COVID policies, there has been a sharp rise in number of international students in several top international study abroad destinations. As a result, these countries are grappling with issues such as unskilled or part-time work going to students leaving the locals in a lurch, insufficient student accommodation, etc. 

These countries have now placed stringent regulations for student visa in order to control the situation.

Here’s a brief synopsis of changes that were made in rules by some top study abroad countries.

U.K.

  1. International students pursuing graduation won’t be allowed to bring their family member / dependant to the U.K. However, students pursuing PhD / doctorate would be allowed.
  2. Student visa cannot be switched to work visa before student completes the stipulated duration of study program
  3. Visa cost has been revised to INR 51, 787

Canada

  1. Facing the highest-ever growth of international students and permanent residents in a single-quarter in 66 years, Canada has made it mandatory for higher education learning institutes to confirm every application directly with IRCC.
  2. Canada has increased the minimum guaranteed amount for international students from CAD 10,000 to CAD 20,365

France 

  1. France has relaxed its visa rules for international students by extending the two-years post-study work visa to five years. With this change, students can apply for short term SCHENGEN visa, seek work opportunities if they have completed a minimum of one semester of masters or doctorate program.

Ireland 

  1. The Irish government has changed post-study visa rules for masters and doctorate students. Those who complete masters in Ireland would be granted two-year post study visa, and those who complete PhD would be granted three-year post study visa.

Australia 

  1. Australia has re-introduced the 48 hours per fortnight part-time work cap for international students.
  2. Stricter English language mandates have been brought in. Student visa applicants would need to have minimum IELTS score of 6.0.
  3. A higher financial proof is now required – students must submit a savings of AUD 24,505 or more.
  4. Visa application fee has also been marginally increased for student visa; from AUD 650 to AUD 715

As overseas education aspirants, students pursuing graduation, masters or doctorate in top international study abroad destinations must be aware of existing rules related to visa, post study work permit, dependant visa, etc. Not doing so could lead to disappointment and wastage of precious time.
