Studying in Australia starts with the right scores. Nail these tests and you’ll not only clear admissions — you’ll open doors to internships, jobs, and PR pathways. Below is the no-fluff guide: what to take, target scores for top unis, and a compact prep plan.
Which tests matter?
English: IELTS (Academic), PTE Academic, TOEFL iBT — these are the core exams universities accept. Australia’s visa rules now recognise an expanded set of approved English tests, so you have more options than before. Study Australia
Standardized tests (when needed):
- GMAT / GRE — mainly for MBA and some Master’s programs.
- SAT — occasionally used for US-style entry or specific pathway programs.
Target scores — aim for these (practical targets)
- General uni entry (most UG/PG programs): IELTS 6.5 overall (no band <6.0) or PTE ~58–65 / TOEFL ≈79–90. (Top unis may require higher for certain courses).
- Competitive courses (engineering, law, med, selective masters): IELTS 7.0+ or PTE 65+; some professional programs ask for higher sub-scores. Example: UTS commonly asks for IELTS 7.0 for many courses.
- MBA & top business schools: GMAT ~600–700+ (top Australia B-schools target ~680–700 median; a solid GMAT/GRE strengthens applications).
(Universities accept multiple tests — always check your chosen course page for exact cut-offs.)
Cut-offs — real examples
- University of Sydney: Standard is IELTS 6.5 (no band <6.0) for many degrees — some faculties need higher.
- University of Melbourne: Undergrad & grad course pages list TOEFL/IELTS/PTE equivalences — many courses expect IELTS 6.5+; course-specific tables show exact cutoffs.
- UTS: For several programs IELTS 7.0 (writing 6.5) or PTE equivalent is required — check course page for exceptions.
6-week prep plan:
Week 1–2: Diagnostic test → identify weakest skill (listening/reading/writing/speaking).
Week 3–4: Focused skill blocks (daily timed practice + 2 full mocks). Use official materials and test-specific strategies (skimming for reading, template answers for writing).
Week 5: Full-length weekly mocks under exam conditions; drill weak sub-skills.
Week 6: Light revision, confidence builds, book the test on a target date.
Daily habit: 60–90 minutes of deliberate practice + one mock per week.
Smart prep tips (short & sharp)
- Mimic the test: Full mocks under exam conditions are non-negotiable.
- Score bump hacks: For IELTS/PTE, polishing writing templates and speaking fluency lifts band scores faster than random practice.
- Use official materials: ETS (TOEFL), IELTS.org, Pearson PTE official practice — highest yield.
- For GMAT/GRE: Focus on Q-section fundamentals, timing, and at least 10 adaptive practice tests. Aim for steady score gains, not last-minute cramming.
- Plan for retake: Leave 4–6 weeks between your test date and admission deadlines.
