France offers thousands of English- and French-taught programs—so the right exam plan depends on your track. Below is a clear, student-friendly guide with exactly what to take, why it matters, and how to prepare.

Choose Your Track → Pick Your Tests

A) English-taught programs
  • Accepted proficiency tests (visa/admissions): IELTS Academic, TOEFL iBT (test-centre), TOEIC, Cambridge. From Jan 1, 2025, online English tests are not accepted for visa (this impacts tests like Duolingo for the visa step—some schools may still use it for admissions, but you’ll need an approved test for the visa
  • Programs available in English: France now offers 1,700+ English-taught degree programs (UG/PG).

Tip: Universities set their own minimum scores; many Master’s ask for mid-band scores. Always check the program page before booking a test. (Use our free shortlist service and we’ll confirm for you.)

B) French-taught programs
  • DELF (A1–B2) and DALF (C1–C2) are official diplomas awarded by the French Ministry of Education—universities commonly expect B2 (DELF) or higher; advanced tracks may prefer DALF C1.
  • TCF (Test de connaissance du français) is a widely recognized standardized test often used for studies and certain immigration/administrative procedures.
C) Other standardized tests (program-specific)
  • GMAT/GRE – frequently requested for Business/Management and STEM Master’s (e.g., Grande École/MiM, MSc). Schools specify whether GMAT or GRE is required/optional.
  • SAT/ACT – may be considered by some selective undergraduate tracks taught in English; check each university’s page (requirements vary).
(We’ll verify this for your exact shortlist so you don’t over-test.)

Quick Exam Map

Goal Primary Exams Where they’re used?

French-taught degree DELF B1–B2 / DALF C1–C2 Admissions language proof (diplomas valid indefinitely)
Flexible language proof TCF Admissions & some admin/immigration uses; result validity limited (re-take after expiry)
Business/STEM Master’s GMAT or GRE Program-specific requirement/advantage (check school policy)
Selective UG (case-by-case) SAT / ACT Some English-track UGs may consider; confirm per university

Campus France interview prep (Études en France)

Most students from “Études en France” countries complete a Campus France application before the visa and may have a short interview to discuss your study plan, academics, and funding. Think of it as a fit & motivation conversation—not a stress interview.

What they can ask: Why this program/city, career goals, how you’ll fund € living costs, prior academics, and any French exposure. Bring clarity, consistency, and supporting documents.

Smart Prep Timeline

  • 12–16 weeks out: Confirm target programs & required exams; book dates (peak slots fill up).
  • 8–12 weeks: Take the main language test; if needed, schedule GMAT/GRE.
  • 4–8 weeks: Complete Campus France (EEF) file; prepare interview talking points + documents.
  • After offers: Keep score reports ready for visa; ensure your language test meets visa-accepted criteria.

How to Prep? (and score higher)

  • Match the format: Do 5–8 full mocks under timed conditions for IELTS/TOEFL/GMAT/GRE.
  • Build evidence: Your SOP should connect past, program fit, and career plan (also helps for Campus France interview cohesion).
  • For French tests: Practice listening & oral production daily; aim for DELF B2 for most degrees; C1 boosts scholarship and admissions competitiveness.
  • For GMAT/GRE: Target the sections most valued by your program (e.g., Quant for STEM/Analytics, IR/Verbal for MiM/Marketing).
  • Documentation discipline: Keep identical name formats across passport, test accounts, and applications—this avoids admin delays.
