Planning to study in New Zealand? Your exact exam list depends on your course, level, and university. Below is a clear, student-first guide to which tests you may need, target scores most universities ask for, how retakes work, and practical prep timelines. Where requirements differ by university or profession (like Nursing).
What exams do you actually need?
A. English proficiency (almost everyone)
Most NZ universities ask for one of IELTS Academic, PTE Academic, or TOEFL iBT. Typical minimums are:
| Test | Typical UG minimum | Typical PG minimum |
|---|---|---|
| IELTS Academic | 6.0 overall, no band < 5.5 | 6.5 overall, no band < 6.0 |
| PTE Academic | 50 overall, no communicative skill < 42 | 58 overall, no communicative skill < 50 |
| TOEFL iBT | 80 overall, common sub-score minimums around 18–19 | 90 overall, Writing often ≥20 |
Programs in Education, Law, and Health often ask for higher English scores (e.g., 7.0 IELTS).
Score validity: IELTS, PTE, and TOEFL scores are generally valid for 2 years from test date.
B. Business/Management (MBA and select Master’s)
- GMAT/ GRE: Some NZ MBAs ask for a GMAT (or an alternative).
- Otago MBA: GMAT 550+ (or Otago Admission Test) is typical.
- Auckland MBA: Emphasises degree + 3+ years management experience; GMAT not listed as a standard requirement.
- English test: IELTS/PTE/TOEFL as above.
C. Engineering/IT/Sciences (non-MBA)
- GRE: Usually not required by NZ universities; admission is based on academics + English test. (Always confirm your specific program.)
- English test: IELTS/PTE/TOEFL as above.
D. Nursing & Healthcare (Registration/Practice)
If you’re training to become a nurse in NZ or seeking registration as an internationally qualified nurse, the Nursing Council of New Zealand (NCNZ) has specific English rules:
- Accepts IELTS Academic or OET; does not accept PTE.
- IELTS: 7.0 in Listening, Reading, Speaking and 6.5 in Writing, scores can be from up to 2 sittings within 12 months (if minimums are met in each band across sittings).
- No online/at-home tests are accepted.
Details: NCNZ official English competence and FAQ pages.
Planning a Bachelors/Masters in Nursing (not immediate registration)? Your university sets entry English scores (usually 6.5–7.0 IELTS). For professional registration later, you must still meet NCNZ standards above.
Retakes, special features & university policies
- IELTS One Skill Retake (OSR): You can retake one section (L/R/W/S) instead of the whole test. All NZ universities accept IELTS OSR, and Immigration New Zealand accepts OSR for certain visa categories (e.g., Working Holiday). For degree admissions, acceptance is university-specific; check your program’s policy.
- PTE retakes: You can book another test as soon as the next available date; results typically arrive within ~2 days.
- TOEFL MyBest scores: Some institutions accept them; others do not (e.g., University of Canterbury does not accept MyBest for UG).
How early should you start?
A practical timeline many successful students follow:
| When | What To Do |
|---|---|
| 6–8 months before intake | Shortlist universities & programs, choose your primary English test (IELTS/PTE/TOEFL). If MBA, decide GMAT plan. |
| 4–6 months before | Take a diagnostic test, start structured prep (see plans below). Book your first official test 10–12 weeks before application deadlines. |
| 2–3 months before | Sit your first test, leave a buffer for retake/OSR if needed. Prepare supporting documents (SOPs, LORs). |
| 1–2 months before | If required, retake to hit target scores. Submit applications early to maximize scholarships and time for visa. |
Target scores to aim for:
These targets are realistic for many degrees; competitive programs may be higher.
- Most Bachelor’s: IELTS 6.0 / PTE 50 / TOEFL iBT 80 (or higher).
- Most Master’s: IELTS 6.5 / PTE 58 / TOEFL iBT 90 (or higher).
- MBA: IELTS 6.5–7.0; GMAT as required (e.g., Otago 550+).
- Nursing (NCNZ registration): IELTS 7.0 (L/R/S) & 6.5 (W) or OET B; PTE not accepted.
Smart prep plans you can do
1. IELTS Academic (8–10 weeks)
- Weeks 1–2: Foundation skills + grammar refresh; daily reading/listening drills.
- Weeks 3–6: Section-wise strategy; 2 full mocks with band-level feedback on writing & speaking.
- Weeks 7–8: Timed full-length tests; focus on weakest section; consider OSR contingency if you’re close.
- If you need a retake: Prioritise the section(s) 0.5 band short; OSR may be faster if your chosen university accepts it.
2. PTE Academic (6–8 weeks)
- Setup: Learn the question types and integrated tasks (why PTE feels fast).
- Weeks 1–2: Speaking micro-skills (content, oral fluency), writing templates responsibly.
- Weeks 3–5: Timed mini-tests; AI-scored practice to calibrate; improve enunciation & pace.
- Weeks 6–8: Two full scored mocks; then official test. Retake quickly if any communicative score dips below threshold.
3. TOEFL iBT (8–10 weeks)
- Weeks 1–2: Academic note-taking drills; reading pacing strategies.
- Weeks 3–6: Speaking task frameworks; writing integrated task structure.
- Weeks 7–8: Full tests under time; submit scores early (ETS releases in ~4–8 days).
- MyBest caution: Confirm your university’s policy before relying on MyBest.
4. MBA (GMAT) (10–12+ weeks)
- Quant (number properties, algebra, word problems), Verbal (CR, RC), IR, and AWA.
- Build from topic drills → mixed sets → full mocks; final 3–4 weeks are for error-log driven revision.
- Check each MBA page—e.g., Otago MBA GMAT 550+; Auckland MBA emphasises work experience rather than GMAT.
5. Nursing (NCNZ English)
If aiming for registration, target IELTS 7/7/7 & 6.5 writing (or OET B). Do two full mocks/week for 3–4 weeks with specialist Writing & Speaking feedback. Remember: PTE is not accepted; no online tests.
Proof & policies you should know
- Accepted tests & levels (non-university providers): NZQA maintains accepted English tests/levels for programmes; universities publish their own tables (see UoA, VUW, UC pages linked above).
- IELTS/PTE/TOEFL score validity: 2 years is the standard (universities, governments, and test makers align to this).
- Result timelines: PTE ≈ 2 days; TOEFL ~4–8 days. IELTS timelines vary by center/delivery.
