From engineering at TU Wien to medicine in Innsbruck, Austria offers world-class programmes at some of Europe’s most respected — and most affordable — universities. But because Austria has no single centralised admissions system, securing your place depends on understanding exactly what each university, and each subject, requires. The earlier you map this out, the smoother your application and student visa process will be.

Not sure which exams and certificates you need for Austria? This page covers language tests, subject-specific entrance exams, and the full 2026/27 application timeline in one place.

Step 1: Language Proficiency — Required for Everyone

Before anything else, you need to prove you can study in your chosen language of instruction. Requirements vary by university and are set independently by each institution’s admissions office.

For English-taught programmes: representative requirements published by WU Vienna (Vienna University of Economics and Business) set IELTS Academic 6.0 or TOEFL iBT 85 (B2 level) for Bachelor’s programmes, and IELTS Academic 7.0 or TOEFL iBT 100 (C1 level) for Master’s programmes. Cambridge FCE/CAE/CPE, PTE Academic, and the Oxford Test of English are also commonly accepted. (source: WU Vienna) These are representative figures — always confirm the exact score your target university requires.

For German-taught programmes: most bachelor’s applications require an A2-level German certificate (ÖSD, Goethe-Zertifikat, or telc Deutsch A2, issued within the last 2 years) simply to apply, while actual enrolment typically requires C1-level German, evidenced by the ÖSD, Goethe-Zertifikat, telc, DSH-2, DSD II, or TestDaF (minimum TDN 4). (source: WU Vienna) As a general baseline, the official OeAD study-in-Austria portal notes that German-taught bachelor’s programmes generally expect a minimum of 4 years of prior German instruction or an equivalent diploma. Step 2: Entrance Exams — Depends on Your Subject

Austria requires subject-specific entrance procedures for a handful of high-demand fields. Here is what applies based on your chosen field.

Medicine & Dentistry (all instruction languages) → MedAT

If Medicine or Dentistry is your goal, the MedAT (Medizinertest / Aufnahmeverfahren) is the exam you must clear. It is jointly organised by the Medical Universities of Vienna, Innsbruck, Graz, and the Medical Faculty of JKU Linz, and is mandatory for all applicants to Human Medicine and Dentistry, EU and non-EU alike. (source: medizinstudieren.at)

● Two versions: MedAT-H for Human Medicine, MedAT-Z for Dentistry

● 2026 test date: 3 July 2026, with results announced in week 32

● Registration: 2–31 March 2026, with a €110 registration fee

● Language: the test itself is administered entirely in German, so C1-level German is essential regardless of your intended programme language

● Non-EU quota: capped at a maximum of 5% of available Human Medicine places, meaning non-EU applicants compete within a separate, limited pool

Veterinary Medicine & Other Restricted-Admission Fields

Vetmeduni Vienna and select programmes in fields such as Psychology or Art & Design (e.g. at Angewandte Vienna or the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna) run their own dedicated admissions procedures, which can include aptitude tests or portfolio reviews. Because formats and non-EU quotas are set independently by each institution and can change between intakes, always confirm the current-cycle requirements directly with your target university’s admissions office before applying.

Qualifications Not Considered Equivalent to the Austrian Matura

If your school-leaving qualification isn’t automatically recognised as comparable to the Austrian Matura, universities such as JKU Linz and the University of Innsbruck offer a University Entrance Qualification Examination (Ergänzungsprüfung / Studienberechtigungsprüfung) as a supplementary pathway — typically an essay plus a small number of subject exams, held several times a year. Whether this applies to you is assessed case-by-case by the admissions office of your chosen university. (source: University of Innsbruck) Students who do need preparatory coursework can enrol in the official OeAD Vorstudienlehrgang (VWU) preparatory programme in Vienna or Graz, which offers dedicated courses in German, English, Maths, and the sciences ahead of university entry. (source: vorstudienlehrgang.oead.at)

Step 3: Apply Directly to Each University — No Central Portal

Unlike some European systems, Austria has no centralised admissions portal — applications are submitted directly to each institution, and the official www.studienwahl.at database is the standard starting point to search across all Austrian degree programmes. (source: studyinaustria.at)

● General public-university deadlines: Winter semester – 5 September; Summer semester – 5 February, for bachelor’s/diploma programmes without special admission procedures (source: bmfwf.gv.at)

● Non-EU applicants often face earlier internal deadlines: at the University of Vienna, for example, third-country nationals applying for Winter Semester 2026/27 must apply by 3 August 2026, roughly a month ahead of the general 5 September deadline (source: univie.ac.at)

● Programmes with entrance exams (e.g. MedAT) or aptitude tests: run on their own, often earlier, separate deadlines — always check the specific programme page

● Universities of Applied Sciences (Fachhochschulen): set independent deadlines on their own websites, distinct from the public-university calendar

Not for English-taught programmes. However, German-taught programmes require A2-level German to apply and C1-level German to enrol, and even English-medium students often find conversational German valuable for daily life and part-time work. (source: WU Vienna)

No. Austria has no centralised admissions portal — you apply directly to each university, using studienwahl.at to search for programmes across institutions. (source: studyinaustria.at)
