Thinking about New Zealand? You’ve picked one of the most welcoming — and most misunderstood — study destinations in the world. All eight New Zealand universities are government-funded and internationally ranked, post-study work rights are generous, and the entry process is genuinely simpler than Europe or North America.

But “simpler” is exactly where students get careless. There’s no national entrance exam to worry about, so applicants assume there’s nothing to prepare for — then get rejected over a single IELTS sub-band or a bank statement that looks suspicious. In New Zealand, your English test and your financial paperwork are the real exam.

Not sure what New Zealand actually requires? This page covers everything — language tests, the two fields that need entrance exams, the hidden second hurdle inside competitive degrees, and the visa requirements for the 2026/2027 intakes.

Step 1: English Proficiency — Your Single Most Important Exam

This is the one test that matters for nearly every international student, and it’s used twice: your university uses it to admit you, and your education provider must formally certify your English ability to Immigration New Zealand.

New Zealand sets these standards nationally through NZQA. The English language requirements apply when providers enrol international students in programmes leading to qualifications at levels 3 to 10 on the New Zealand Qualifications and Credentials Framework. If a specific programme’s approved entry requirements exceed the national minimum, you must meet the higher level (source: NZQA — English language entry requirements for international students). Frasers Medical

There Is No Single "New Zealand IELTS Score"

This is the most common misconception, and it costs students money. Requirements are set per programme, not per country or per university. The University of Auckland states that every programme page on its website specifies the minimum IELTS Academic score for that programme (source: University of Auckland — Undergraduate English Language Requirements). The University of Auckland

Real published examples, so you can see the spread:

Programme (verified example) Requirement
Bachelor of Architectural Studies, Victoria University of Wellington Bachelorsportal IELTS Academic 6.0 overall, no sub-score below 5.5 Bachelorsportal
Graduate Diploma in Engineering, University of Auckland The University of Auckland IELTS 6.5 overall, minimum band 6.0 The University of Auckland
Bachelor of Education (Teaching) & Graduate Diplomas in Teaching, University of Auckland The University of Auckland IELTS 7.0 overall, minimum band 7.0 The University of Auckland
Diploma-level entry, Massey University Jubeerich IELTS 5.5 or equivalent Jubeerich

Sources: Victoria University of Wellington · University of Auckland — 2026 UG English Language Requirements (PDF) · Massey University

The broad pattern — roughly 5.5 for diplomas, 6.0 for bachelor’s degrees, 6.5 for postgraduate study, and 7.0 for professionally registered fields like teaching and nursing — is a useful planning guide, but it is not a rule. Teaching applicants in particular must provide evidence of English competency as required by the Teaching Council NZ. Look up your exact programme before booking a test. The University of Auckland

⚠️ Critical 2026 Update — TOEFL iBT Applicants Read This

A new TOEFL iBT test format and scoring system launched on 21 January 2026. Because the new scores do not align with the scores required on NZQA’s Table for internationally recognised English proficiency outcomes, they cannot be accepted by non-university tertiary education providers for entry to programmes in New Zealand. Tests taken before 21 January 2026 under the old scoring system can still be accepted, as can the current Australia test, which uses the old format (source: NZQA). Frasers Medical

What this means for you: if you’re applying to a polytechnic, Institute of Technology, or private training establishment in 2026, choose IELTS Academic or PTE Academic. Universities may still process TOEFL, but IELTS remains the lowest-risk option.

The IELTS One Skill Retake Advantage

If you miss your target by one band in a single module, you may not need to resit the whole test. The University of Auckland accepts the IELTS One Skill Retake, allowing you to retake one skill that fell below the required band — provided the retake is completed within 60 days of your original test and is registered specifically as a “One Skill Retake” (source: University of Auckland). The University of Auckland

This is institution-specific. Confirm acceptance with your own provider before relying on it.

Test Validity

Your result must have been achieved in the two years before your programme’s start date (source: NZQA). Frasers Medical

You May Be Exempt From Testing Entirely

NZQA accepts a range of alternative evidence, including: NCEA Level 3 with New Zealand University Entrance; a Cambridge A-level qualification or International Baccalaureate Diploma taught and assessed in English; a bachelor’s, master’s, or doctoral degree taught in English from a provider in New Zealand, Australia, Canada, Fiji, Ireland, South Africa, the United Kingdom, the United States, or other listed countries; or prior schooling in one of those countries — either five years of secondary education, or all primary education plus at least three years of secondary, with English as the language of instruction (source: NZQA). Frasers Medical

If your English is close but not quite there, universities run bridging pathways. Auckland’s English Pathway for Undergraduate Studies (EPUS) is a 10-week direct-entry course, and students who complete it with the required grade are not required to take IELTS or any similar test. Entry to the pathway requires IELTS 5.0 overall for undergraduates or 5.5 overall for postgraduates (source: University of Auckland — English Language Courses). The University of Auckland

Step 2: Entrance Exams — Only Two Fields Require Them

Most New Zealand programmes have no entrance exam. There are two exceptions, and the Medicine rules are more nuanced than most guides admit.

Medicine → UCAT ANZ (Rules Differ by University — Read Carefully)

New Zealand has only two medical schools — the University of Auckland and the University of Otago — and neither accepts direct school-leaver entry into the MBChB. School leavers cannot apply directly to the MBChB and are advised to apply via First Year entry (source: University of Auckland — MBChB). You must first complete a qualifying first-year programme, then compete for a limited number of places. MedEntry

The critical point most guides get wrong: the two universities have different UCAT rules for international students.

At the University of Auckland:
International graduate-entry applicants are not required to sit UCAT ANZ. To apply under the Graduate entry category, international applicants need a relevant degree completed full-time at a recognised university with a minimum GPA/GPE of 6.0, defined as a degree including courses equivalent to CHEM 110, BIOSCI 107, MEDSCI 142 and POPLHLTH 111, with the last year of full-time study no more than five years before the year of application. Shortlisted international applicants are interviewed via Kira Talent, with interviews taking place between June and July (source: University of Auckland — MBChB). MedEntry

⚠️ However, Auckland states that entry criteria will change for 2028 entry and advises applicants to review the relevant entry requirements carefully. For 2027 entry, applicants are required to sit the UCAT ANZ (source: University of Auckland). The exemption for international graduate applicants should not be assumed to hold beyond the current cycle. MedEntry

At the University of Otago:
From 2027, both domestic and international students applying for Medicine must sit the UCAT, with a narrow exception for government-sponsored Kuwaiti or Omani students enrolled in Foundation in 2026. From 2028, all domestic and international students applying for Medicine must sit the UCAT (source: University of Otago — AskOtago). MedEntry

Otago’s thresholds are reset annually. Applicants must achieve a threshold score in all UCAT sections, set each year by the Medical Admissions Committee. For entry to the 2027 MBChB programme, general-applicant thresholds include Verbal Reasoning at or above the lowest 20th percentile and Situational Judgement at or above the lowest 10th percentile. Where all admission criteria are met, the final determining factor for selection is academic score (source: University of Otago — Study Medicine at Otago). Treat these percentile figures as cycle-specific and verify them for your own year of application. AskOtago

Registration: UCAT ANZ is run by Pearson, not by the universities, so you must register directly through the UCAT ANZ website. Students with special educational needs, disabilities, or medical conditions must apply for and receive approval for access arrangements before a test can be booked (source: University of Otago — AskOtago). MedEntry

Bottom line: if you are targeting Medicine in New Zealand from 2027 onward, plan on sitting the UCAT regardless of which school you’re aiming for. The exemptions are narrowing.

Business & Management Master's → GMAT / GRE (Frequently Optional)

New Zealand is flexible here compared to the US or Europe. Most institutions weigh work experience and academic record more heavily than a standardised test score.

At Otago, there are two routes to the same requirement. Applicants present a 15-minute analysis of a case study followed by a short question-and-answer discussion — or alternatively meet the requirement by submitting a GMAT score of 550 or higher. A decision is made within one week of the interview (source: University of Otago MBA). LeapScholar

GRE is widely accepted as an alternative to GMAT. Policies vary significantly between institutions and change year to year — always verify on the specific programme page before booking a test.

Everything Else → No Entrance Exam at Entry

Engineering, IT, Computer Science, Nursing, Architecture, Design, Science, Arts and Commerce require no standardised entrance test to enter. Admission rests on academic transcripts, subject prerequisites, English proficiency, and — for postgraduate entry — your SOP, CV and Letters of Recommendation.

⚠️ But Watch for Internal Selection After Year One

Here’s what catches students out. Several competitive New Zealand degrees admit you into a broad first year, then run a second, GPA-based selection to enter the specialisation. Architecture is a clear example.

At Victoria University of Wellington, you don’t need to submit a portfolio to get into the first year of the Bachelor of Architectural Studies — which sounds easy. But selection into second-year BAS courses is based on academic performance in first-year core courses. To be considered, you need a minimum average grade threshold of B (GPA 5.0) across SARC112 and your best five courses. Students below this threshold are not eligible for selection, and those eligible are offered places based on GPA ranking (source: Victoria University of Wellington — Limited Entry: Architecture and Design). StudySpy

The same structure applies to Medicine (via first-year Health Sciences) and several other clinical and design programmes. Your first year in New Zealand is often the real entrance exam. Plan for it.

Step 3: Student Visa Requirements — The Hidden "Exam"

Perfect scores mean nothing if your visa is declined, and financial documentation causes more New Zealand refusals than test scores do.

The Funds Requirement — Official Figures

If you are paying for yourself and your studies are tertiary level, English language, or other non-compulsory study, you must have NZD $20,000 for each year if you are studying for 1 year or more, or NZD $1,667 for each month if your study is shorter than 1 year. If you are studying in compulsory education — for example at a school in Years 1 to 13 — you must have NZD $17,000 for each year or NZD $1,417 for each month (source: Immigration New Zealand — Fee Paying Student Visa). The University of Auckland

Acceptable evidence includes bank statements, documents showing living costs have been paid such as confirmation of a school homestay, evidence of a full or partial scholarship, evidence of an education loan including the loan sanction letter covering security, moratorium period, interest payable and repayments plus evidence of how the loan will be repaid, evidence of fixed-term deposits, a sponsor’s sharing ID, or a Financial Undertaking for a Student form completed by an acceptable guarantor (source: Immigration New Zealand). The University of Auckland

Two rules Indian students especially need to know:

Citizens of China, India, Nepal, the Philippines, Sri Lanka and Vietnam may be able to use the Funds Transfer Scheme to show they will be able to access funds in New Zealand. And if you are applying in South Asia — India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Nepal or Bhutan — only immediate family are able to sponsor you or provide a financial undertaking. Immediate family means your partner, parents, siblings, grandparents and parents-in-law (source: Immigration New Zealand). The University of Auckland

An uncle, cousin or family friend cannot sponsor you from South Asia. This single rule causes a large share of avoidable refusals.

Money for Your Return Ticket Must Be Separate

You must show you plan to leave New Zealand at the end of your stay, either with a ticket for travel out of New Zealand or documents such as bank statements showing you have enough money to buy one. The money for your ticket must be in addition to what you have to live on (source: Immigration New Zealand). The University of Auckland

Other Mandatory Conditions
  • Offer of Place. Your offer must include a declaration signed by your education provider stating they are satisfied the course is appropriate to your expectations and that you have the English language ability and academic capability to pass it. Your provider must be a signatory to the Education (Pastoral Care of Tertiary and International Learners) Code of Practice 2021. If applying from outside New Zealand, you can apply with a conditional offer — INZ can approve your visa in principle, but you must provide an unconditional offer before the visa can be granted. The University of AucklandThe University of Auckland
  • Insurance. You must agree to hold medical and travel insurance from the start of your course until your visa expires. Your policy must meet the requirements of the Code of Practice 2021 and be acceptable to your provider. PhD students do not need insurance. The University of Auckland
  • Health. If staying more than 6 months you must have a chest X-ray if you are a citizen of, or have spent more than 3 months in the last 5 years in, a country that does not have a low incidence of tuberculosis. Evidence must be less than 3 months old when received. The University of Auckland
  • Police certificates. Required if you are 17 or older and your total time in New Zealand will be 24 months or longer. They must be less than 6 months old when you apply — INZ does not accept a receipt showing you have applied for one. The University of Auckland
  • NZ Traveller Declaration (NZTD) must be completed by everyone entering New Zealand.

(All: Immigration New Zealand — Fee Paying Student Visa)

Cost, Processing Time and Length of Stay

The Fee Paying Student Visa costs from NZD $850, with 80% of applications processed within 8 weeks, and can be issued for a maximum of 4 years. Paper applications are no longer accepted — all applications must be submitted online. International students are strongly encouraged to apply 3 months before their intended travel date (source: Immigration New Zealand). The University of Auckland

Work Rights — 25 Hours

This visa lets you work part-time up to 25 hours a week while studying and full-time in holidays, depending on your visa conditions. To be granted full-time holiday work rights you must show your course has a value of 120 credits and provide the scheduled holiday dates. If you are aged 16 or 17 at a tertiary provider, or in Years 12 or 13 at school, you need written permission to work from both your parent or legal guardian and your education provider. Students aged 15 or younger cannot work on a student visa (source: Immigration New Zealand). The University of Auckland

A Useful Detail Most Students Miss

Evidence of English language test results is not mandatory for the visa application itself, but can help INZ assess your genuine intention to study (source: Immigration New Zealand). The University of Auckland

Your university needs the score. INZ treats it as supporting evidence of genuineness — which means a strong score helps your visa even though it isn’t formally demanded.

Quick Exam Reference Map

Exam Who Needs It Purpose
IELTS Academic Almost all international applicants University admission; supports visa genuineness
PTE Academic Alternative to IELTS University admission
TOEFL iBT Alternative — ⚠️ 2026 scoring restriction Universities only; not accepted at non-university providers
UCAT ANZ Medicine — rules differ by university and year MBChB entry at Auckland & Otago
GMAT / GRE MBA & competitive Business Master's Often optional; 550+ at Otago, or case-study alternative
No entrance exam Engineering, IT, Science, Nursing, Arts, Commerce, Architecture Transcript-based entry — but watch for internal Year 1 selection

Four Things Students Consistently Get Wrong

1. Chasing the overall band and ignoring the sub-bands. A 7.0 overall with 5.5 in Writing still fails a “6.0, no band below 5.5” requirement. Balanced preparation beats lopsided brilliance.

2. Assuming “no entrance exam” means “no competition.” Several degrees are selected internally after the first year of GPA. Architecture at Victoria requires a B average across specified courses just to be eligible for second-year selection.

3. Getting the wrong sponsor. In South Asia, only immediate family can sponsor you. An uncle or family friend will not be accepted, no matter how strong their finances.

4. Leaving financial documentation until the visa stage. INZ requires evidence that money comes from a genuine source it can confirm. Sudden large deposits weeks before applying invite scrutiny. Start six months early.

The Eleevate Advantage for Your New Zealand Prep

At Eleevate Overseas, we build New Zealand exam strategies around what the country actually assesses. Because requirements are set programme by programme — not university by university — we map your exact target course to its published sub-band thresholds rather than guessing from generic figures.

For Medicine aspirants, we track the diverging UCAT rules at Auckland and Otago and prepare students ahead of the 2027 and 2028 changes. And because financial documentation quietly sinks more New Zealand applications than any test score, we help you build an INZ-ready, fully traceable fund file — including navigating the South Asia sponsorship restriction and the Funds Transfer Scheme available to Indian students.

For most fields — Engineering, IT, Science, Business, Arts, Commerce, Nursing, Architecture — no. Admission is based on academic transcripts plus English proficiency. Medicine is the main exception, and rules differ by university. Be aware that some competitive degrees run internal GPA-based selection after the first year.

There's no single national figure — it's set per programme. The University of Auckland specifies the required IELTS Academic score on every individual programme page (source: University of Auckland).
