What It Is & Why You Need It

If you’re planning to study in Germany and your previous education uses a grading system different from Germany, you’ll need to convert your grades. Our German Grade Calculator helps you estimate your German equivalent grade quickly and accurately — so you can apply with confidence.

What Is the German Grading Scale?

Germany uses a numerical grading scale where lower values indicate better performance.

  • 1.0 – 1.5 Excellent (sehr gut)
  • 1.6 – 2.5 Good (gut)
  • 2.6 – 3.5 Satisfactory (befriedigend)
  • 3.6 – 4.0 Sufficient / Pass (ausreichend)
  • 5.0 and above Fail (nicht bestanden)

Most German universities ask international students to convert their grades before applying, especially for master’s and competitive bachelor’s programs.

Convert your home country grades to the German grading system using the Modified Bavarian Formula

German Grading Scale Guide

1.0 - 1.5: Very Good (A+) - Excellent performance
1.6 - 2.5: Good (A/B) - Above average performance
2.6 - 3.5: Satisfactory (C) - Average performance
3.6 - 4.0: Sufficient (D) - Minimum passing grade
> 4.0: Fail (F) - Below passing threshold

Most universities in Germany use a standard conversion method called the Modified Bavarian Formula.

Formula:
German Grade = 1 + 3 × (Nmax – Nyour) ÷ (Nmax – Npass)

Where:

  • Nmax = Maximum grade in your system (e.g., 100% or 10 CGPA)
  • Npass = Minimum passing grade in your system (e.g., 40% or 50%)
  • Nyour = The score or grade you achieved

This gives you an approximate German grade on the 1.0–4.0 scale.

Note: This conversion is for estimation purposes only. The final assessment is always done by the university.

How Grade Conversion Works

Modified Bavarian Formula

  3. Enter your obtained grade / percentage / CGPA.
  4. Click “Calculate” — the tool will show your equivalent German grade (on 1.0–4.0 scale).
