Dreaming of studying in Hungary? Whether it’s medicine in Budapest, engineering in Győr, or business in the heart of Central Europe, Hungary offers hundreds of English-taught programmes at highly ranked, EU-recognised universities — many of them significantly more affordable than Western Europe. But admission, and in several fields your student visa timeline, depends on clearing the right exam or interview at the right time.
Not sure which requirements apply to you? This page covers every layer — from English proficiency to subject-specific entrance exams — for the 2026/2027 intake.
Step 1: Language Proficiency — Required for (Almost) Everyone
Before anything else, you must prove you can study in your chosen language of instruction.
For English-taught programmes, most universities require IELTS Academic 6.0–6.5 or TOEFL iBT 80–90; some institutions (including several public universities) also accept a Medium of Instruction (MOI) certificate from your previous English-medium school in lieu of a test score — always confirm with your specific university and department, as policies vary by faculty.
For Hungarian-taught programmes (rare among international applicants but available), a minimum B2 level under the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) is required.
Step 2: Entrance Exams — Depends on Your Subject
Medicine (English-taught) → University-Run Entrance Exam
If Medicine is your goal, Hungary’s public medical universities — Semmelweis University, University of Debrecen, University of Szeged and University of Pécs — each run their own entrance examination rather than one shared national test.
Using Semmelweis University’s process as the reference model: the exam comprises four written components — Medical Biology, Medical Chemistry, General English and Biomedical English — each with 20 questions administered in a strict 20-minute window, scored +1 for a correct answer with proportional deductions for incorrect ones. Core topics include evolution, cell biology, genetics, physiology and reproduction, tested with English medical terminology. (Source: Semmelweis University – Entrance Exam )
Format: Four 20-question written tests (20 minutes each), held online via a secure exam browser, plus a personal interview on motivation and communication (in person or online). (Source: Semmelweis University – Entrance Exam )
Schedule: Exams run regularly, roughly once or twice a week, from early February/March through the end of June each admission cycle. (Source: Semmelweis University – General Medicine Programme )
Eligibility: Applicants should be at least 18 by the end of the admission year (preferably under 30), hold or be completing a high school diploma, and demonstrate upper-intermediate English. (Source: Semmelweis University – General Medicine Programme )
Admission is based on your combined written-test and interview performance — there is no separate, centralised national medical entrance exam equivalent across all Hungarian universities, so requirements can differ slightly at Debrecen, Szeged and Pécs.
Veterinary Medicine → Subject Test + Interview
The University of Veterinary Medicine Budapest, one of the world’s oldest veterinary schools (founded 1787), keeps a deliberately limited intake each year to preserve teaching quality, so its entrance process includes a biology/chemistry-based assessment and a personal interview evaluating your readiness for a demanding, hands-on clinical curriculum. Engineering, Business, Economics & Computer Science → Document-Based Review
Most technical and business Bachelor’s and Master’s programmes — at institutions such as the Budapest University of Technology and Economics (BME) or Corvinus University of Budapest — do not require a written entrance exam. Instead, admission is based on your academic transcripts, a statement of motivation, and (for some Master’s programmes) a portfolio or online interview with the admissions committee. Confirm subject-specific prerequisites (Mathematics, Physics) directly with the faculty.
Dentistry & Pharmacy → University Entrance Exam
Similar in structure to the medicine entrance exam, dentistry and pharmaceutical sciences applicants at Semmelweis and other medical faculties sit written subject tests (Biology/Chemistry and English) plus an interview. (Source: Semmelweis University – Entrance Exam )
Step 3: If You're Applying via Stipendium Hungaricum — Don't Miss This Parallel Deadline
Many Indian students pursue admission alongside Hungary’s flagship, government-funded Stipendium Hungaricum scholarship. This is a separate, centralised application submitted through the apply.stipendiumhungaricum.hu portal — distinct from, and in addition to, your direct university application — requiring academic transcripts, a motivation letter, and (for select fields) a written or interview component set by your chosen university. (Source: Stipendium Hungaricum – Application Portal )
2026/2027 Application Deadline: 15 January 2026, 2:00 PM CET. (Source: Stipendium Hungaricum – 2026/2027 Call for Applications )
Applicants can rank up to two preferred study programmes/universities on a single application.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
1. Is IELTS mandatory for studying in Hungary?
For most English-taught programmes, IELTS Academic 6.0–6.5 or TOEFL iBT 80–90 is the standard requirement, though some universities accept a Medium of Instruction (MOI) certificate instead — always confirm with your specific faculty. (Source: Stipendium Hungaricum – Application Portal )
2. Is there one national entrance exam for all Hungarian medical universities?
No. Semmelweis University, the University of Debrecen, the University of Szeged and the University of Pécs each run their own entrance exam and interview process; formats are broadly similar (Biology, Chemistry, English) but dates, fees and exact weighting differ by university. (Source: Semmelweis University – Entrance Exam )
3. Can I study in Hungary without knowing Hungarian?
Yes. Hungary offers 800+ programmes taught fully in English across its Stipendium Hungaricum partner universities alone. (Source: Stipendium Hungaricum – 2025 Application Record ) That said, basic conversational Hungarian makes daily life and part-time work considerably easier.
4. Does a strong entrance-exam score improve my scholarship chances?
Yes. A strong academic profile and entrance-exam performance strengthen both your direct university application and your Stipendium Hungaricum application, since partner universities rank and recommend candidates as part of the scholarship's selection process.
